A different way to think about fitness safety
Since the start of this segment I have been fortunate to share with many Tulsans how they get and stay in shape. One of my main concerns especially with Tulsa’s many fitness orientated women is not program design but lack of awareness to their surroundings. We’re going to go over a few fitness tips they are often preached in books and magazines that are in doubt good for fitness but could be dangerous.
Parking car far away from store - I hear this advice given to people all the time from fitness guru’s all over the country. Yes, the fitness trainer in me agrees that doing this can help develop a habit for activity. On the other hand, the self-defense instructor in me thinks this can be dangerous. Many busy store parking lots are gold mines for certain individuals looking for victims with bad intentions. My opinion is park close as you can and get your physical activity in a place statistically less dangerous place
Stairwells – Another piece of advice that’s horrible is telling women to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Many women have been sexually assaulted in stairwells. They are truly horrible places. Don’t take them unless you’re confident in the area.
Running early morning or late at night - I realize many people’s busy work schedule makes it impossible to workout except for early morning or late nights but you must be aware of your surroundings. Many of surrounding parks are very well lit and often have more people on the same work schedule. If you must run late or early before the sun is up try to avoid dark neighborhoods that would allow someone to sneak up on you.
Be prepared - I think mace is a great option for a runner. It’s non lethal and can be quite effective. It can also prepare you for a different but often equally dangerous threat. Dog attacks have become increasingly more common, especially if you run in neighborhoods. A vicious dog can put you in the hospital. The risk is great enough to spend several dollars on a can of mace.
Question from viewers:
Craig Perez
I need to lose some weight but every time I start a diet, I last for two weeks and then burn out. It just seems like too many changes all at once and I get overwhelmed. Do you have any suggestions that might make it easier?
Kim Fox
I want sleek, sexy legs. What’s the best way to get them?
