Beating the Summer Heat with Indoor Fitness

I’m such a proponent against working out in the heat that I thought it would be good to go over some fun and effective indoor exercises.

Spinning - Cycling has been experiencing rapid growth here in the U.S. This is largely due to the baby boomers that, because of aging joints, are trading in their running shoes for a bike. To keep an intense Oklahoma summer from spoiling your cycling routine consider spin class. Spin class is an awesome workout because it is both aerobic and anaerobic due to the interval heavy format. Even in an air conditioned facility, you’ll burn more calories because the cooler air will allow for greater intensity and intensity is the secret to fat-loss. I don’t offer spin at my gym but Tulsa is full of many talented instructors.

Treadmill running – Now before all the avid runners out there curse my name, please bear with me. I know that treadmill running makes you feel like a hamster on a wheel. I know it’s boring but also understand that studies show that running on the treadmill can reduce overuse injuries by up to 50%. The softer surface really gives your feet and joints a little break. And even though treadmill running can be a bit monotonous understand it will be much more enjoyable, not to mention safer that running in 100 degree weather.

Martial Arts - I always see an increase in enrollment in my martial arts program during the summer months as well as my colleagues who own other schools. Why? Well, martial arts are fun and is almost always is provided indoors, in a fun, clean, safe and cool environment. Martial Arts also have a benefit that other fitness programs don’t: you get to learn the valuable skill of self-defense.
