Making your workout more enjoyable

There’s no doubt an effective fat-burning/muscle building workout is hard work but it doesn’t have to be a miserable experience. Forget the “no pain, no gain“ saying. This mentality is outdated and can be dangerous. Instead I have 5 tips based on science and common sense that can make you actually enjoy your workouts more.

1. Warming up - It’s more than just to prevent muscle injury. Starting intense exercise cold is a guaranteed ticket to a horrible workout, especially cardio training. Let your body gradually build up to intensity before going to hard. As for weight training studies show that performing a rehearsal movement before lifting is like a warm-up for your nervous system. It’s important to remember even elite power lifters often warm-up with just a 45 pound bar and they can lift hundreds of pounds.

2. Turn down the heat – Working out when it’s too hot can not only makes your workout a miserable experience but it can be dangerous. Working out in the heat does not make you tougher; it does not get you in better shape. All it does is cause premature strain on the body, causing you to either decrease duration and or intensity. Most experts agree you should where light clothes and you should start your workout feeling a bit chilly.

3. Cool down - Most people warm-up but not very many cool down. If you stop completely after an intense workout it can be hard on your system. Just like you eased into your workout, make sure you ease out of it. Try this exercise. It stretches you out but keeps your heart rate at a moderate level.

4. Water and sleep- These are the two biggest factors I have to battle trying to train my busy clients. Dehydration, even slight dehydration can dramatically decrease performance in everything you do. Remember your body is mostly water. Also if you’re not getting enough sleep I wouldn’t even bother working out. Exercising while not getting enough rest is a complete waste of time. You will get zero results.

How far down should I go on a squat?

I am not a good cook and it’s hard to find healthy desserts in the store. Do you have any desserts that are healthy but super easy?
