Strengthening Your Body’s Most Vulnerable Areas

There are certain joints and muscle groups that are more vulnerable to injury than others. We’re going to show you what they are and how to make them more injury resistant.

1. Shoulder - It is the body’s most maneuverable joint, but with that flexibility comes more instability. Your shoulder is not like the hip. It is a partly-encased, half moon looking socket and held by a group of muscles called the rotator cuff. Strengthen these rotator cuffs to decrease a chance of joint slippage or muscle tear. (Kyle will demonstrate)

2. Knee – Tendon and ligament tears are very common in this area typically in weekend warriors that move suddenly and quickly. Remember, jogging will not condition your knees to move in all directions. You have to condition them. This is called the side lunge that prepares your knee ligaments to cut in angles. It’s also important to note that women are three times more likely than men to get ACL tears so for the young female athletes out there single leg, lateral exercises are a must.

3. Back - Great thing about strengthening a weak back is that you don’t have to lift heavy. Dr. Start McGill, the world foremost back expert, says that it is muscular endurance, not strength that determines a healthy back. Try this exercise, it’s called the bird dog and is one of Dr. McGill’s favorite.
