Encouraging Fitness in Children
A few months ago we went over some activities kids can do to get in shape but today we’re giving parents some tips to help develop healthy exercise habits in their children.
1. Try Martial Arts- I am a little bias, all admit but Martial Arts is more than just self-defense. It helps develop self-confidence, concentration and the health and fitness benefits are absolutely incredible. Here in Tulsa, we are fortunate to have some great martial arts schools and instructors. These children regularly take my tae kwon do program and they are really fit.
2. Limit video games and television- It’s important for parents to know that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a maximum of 2 hours of television or video games daily. Walking and playing is crucial for development of tendons, ligaments and muscle in early stages and too much T.V can interfere with children’s natural activity patterns. Recently video game companies have tried to make the hobby much more interactive and physical like the Nintendo Wii. This is an affordable video game system that can improve your child’s health.
3. Parents set the example- This is the single most effective way to get kids off the couch and active. If mom and dad make exercise a daily habit kids will adopt this philosophy as well.
